Here’s what you need to know:
You don't need planning permission for energy/retrofit home upgrades such as:
Internal insulation.
External insulation - some caution advised, see note below.
Solar panels - some restrictions on size and placement apply.
Wind turbines - some restrictions on size, placement and noise levels apply.
Key areas to watch out for:
External insulation will only be considered exempt from planning if it does not negatively impact the "character" of your house and/or its neighbours - this is particularly important for older buildings regardless of protected structure status. If you are unsure seek professional advice.
Make sure external insulation upgrades don't go beyond your legal ownership boundary e.g. if your front wall abuts the public footpath, use internal insulation instead.
Requirements are different for protected structures - altering the internal and external walls, floors, ceilings and finishes may require planning permission.
Some other important things to consider when planning a build:
Anything you build (regardless of planning requirements) will have to comply with the Building Regulations - these govern everything from energy performance to the size of window openings
Depending on the size and duration of your project, you may need to appoint project supervisors to ensure your build goes safely.
Consider using the services of a registered Architect, Engineer or Surveyor who will be familiar with the planning system.
